Engineers, Architects, and Builders Needed

Youth Volunteer Corps of Hampton Roads is currently recruiting engineers, architects and builders who would like to mentor a Canstructure team by providing input related to the design and methods for improving structural integrity. Teams include students from elementary, middle and high schools from across Hampton Roads. We will try to pair a mentor with a team according to the team’s meeting schedule and the mentor’s availability. Two school visits per month from February to April, plus attendance at the Canstructure event (Saturday, April 27) are encouraged. Mentors can serve an advisory role or take on the role of a co-sponsor (coach) in tandem with the teacher who leads the team. The theme for this year’s event is “Out of This World,” and structures must be built exclusively from donated canned food items (with a few exceptions, including approved supports to stabilize the structure and props for visual appeal).

YVCHR is also seeking sponsors and judges for this annual event, which benefits the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank by providing over 25,000 pounds of food at a time when their shelves are low on inventory. Schools will compete st Patrick Henry Mall from 8am-1:30pm at Patrick Henry Mall on April 27. Awards ceremony to follow.

Anyone who is interested or has questions can email Katie or call 757-223-7078. To learn more about the Event, click here.
